🌸💫“What Can She See?” Islamic Guidelines on Women’s Aurah Before Other Women & Mahrams🧕👭🕌✨💞

In a world that celebrates freedom and expression, the boundaries of modesty remain sacred in Islam — not just between men and women, but even between women and their mahrams.

But what exactly is the aurah of a Muslim woman in front of:

Her fellow Muslim sisters?

Her mahram male relatives (like her father, brother, uncle)?

💡🧕💭🤔📜❓

Let’s explore the fiqh rulings based on classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning), contemporary fatwas, and academic research.

🕌📚💬⚖️💞

🌷🧕 AURAH IN FRONT OF FELLOW WOMEN

Majority of fuqaha’ (jurists), especially in the Syafi’i and Hanafi schools, agree:

"عورة المرأة مع المرأة كعورة الرجل مع الرجل، وهو ما بين السرة والركبة"

"A woman’s aurah before another woman is like that of a man before another man — from the navel to the knees."

— Imam Nawawi, al-Majmu’

So, in private spaces among Muslim women, a woman may uncover:

  1. Hair
  2. Arms
  3. Neck
  4. Legs (above the knees are not allowed)

BUT — this is only when there's no fear of fitnah or inappropriate attraction.

⚠️💬

If a woman fears her privacy might be violated or misused (especially today with social media and hidden cameras!), modesty is still recommended.

💞🧔‍♂️ AURAH IN FRONT OF MAHRAM MEN

Who are mahram men?

  1. Father, grandfather
  2. Brother
  3. Son
  4. Uncle (father/mother’s side)
  5. Nephew

“ولا يبدين زينتهن إلا لبعولتهن أو آبائهن…”

"And they should not expose their adornment except to their husbands, or their fathers…"

— (Surah An-Nur, 24:31)

According to Imam al-Khatib al-Syarbini (Mughni al-Muhtaj):

"للمرأة أن تكشف أمام محارمها ما يظهر غالبًا كالرأس والرقبة والذراعين والساقين، لا بين السرة والركبة"

"A woman may reveal before her mahrams what is normally uncovered, such as the head, neck, arms, and legs — but not the area between navel and knees."

So in front of mahram men, she can show:

  1. Hair
  2. Neck
  3. Forearms
  4. Lower legs

But the area between navel and knees must still be covered, as it's part of the absolute aurah even from family.

🔒 Modesty is Always the Foundation

Even with fellow women and mahram men, hayaa’ (modesty) is not just about covering, it’s about attitude, intention, and respect.

 الحياء شعبة من الإيمان

“Modesty is a branch of faith.” — (Hadith, Bukhari & Muslim)

🌿 Islam respects human dignity, including female privacy.

Modesty is not about shame — it's about elevating value.

🧠 Important Notes in Today’s Era

In modern times, with:

Gender fluidity

Social surveillance

Digital sharing

Public changing rooms

Fashion modeling

Scholars urge Muslim women to err on the side of caution, even in same-gender spaces, if there’s any doubt of safety or morality.

📸🚫🧕📱💭❌

“Even when permissibility exists in fiqh, the ethics of modesty should guide the believer beyond the bare minimum.”

— (Dr. Akram Nadwi, Cambridge Islamic College)

✅ TL;DR (Too Long; Didn’t Read)

In front of fellow Muslim women:

Aurah = between navel and knees

Can uncover hair, arms, legs, etc.

BUT, caution and context matter!

In front of mahram men:

Hair, neck, forearms, legs = OK

Between navel and knees = NO

Modesty is always encouraged!

🌟 Final Reminder:

Islamic modesty is not just about hiding — it’s about honoring.

Whether in front of women or mahrams, you carry dignity, respect, and grace.

Walk with it. Guard it. Cherish it.
